Or-uh-GUN

While getting some books on hiking around Portland from the library, I stumbled across a little gem.
It's called "Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in Portland"
I had to check it out and we have gotten a kick out of it.
So,
if you ever happen to be in Portland
and you want to pretend that you are a native
here are a few tips:
DON'TS:
don't pronounce it Or-eh-GONE, it's Or-uh-gun. (practice before you arrive)
don't call it the shore or beach-it's called the coast
don't carry an umbrella, even despite all the rain-you'll look like a tourist
don't pump your own gas-it's illegal

DO'S:
keep your soft drink cans and water bottles to return for mulah
buy anything you need and enjoy no sales tax!

And here is some local lingo to help you fit in:
Back East: anywhere east of Denver
Car Prowl: theft from an automobile
MAX: same thing as Utah's Trax
NoPo: hipster name for North Portland
FoGro/The Grove: hipster name for Forest Grove, where we live
Webfoot: a native or thoroughly naturalized Oregonian

Have we ever heard anyone use any of these terms besides the MAX?
Nope.

As we have been preparing for our upcoming trip to our Utah home, we have realized just how much we really love it out here and will miss it while we are gone. We have particularly enjoyed the incredible spring out here that doesn't involve snow! We are excited to spend most of our summer here in FoGro and plan on spending lots of time at the beach coast!

Haha, that's funny. I remember visiting there and not knowing about the random law against pumping your own gas... my brother and I were like, "Uhh.. okay, well, that was nice of them!" the first time they came out to & did it. Ha. It's so fun to learn the secrets of other cultures :)
