On December 20, we had tickets to fly home to SLC at about 5 pm. The airport is about an hour from where we live and we were lucky to have an optometry friend drive us there. He had to take us pretty early, but we didn't mind hanging out at the airport for a while; less stressing about crowds and such! We had a couple of hours of hanging out in our terminal and we got to talking about how sometimes they give you flight vouchers if you give up your seats on overbooked flights. Chris asked if I would do it if we were ever offered that and with a few exceptions I said most likely. I didn't think much more of it until our flight started boarding...and they offered $400 in flight vouchers to anyone willing to give up their seats since the flight was overbooked. At first we didn't jump on it, not realizing it would be $400 EACH. They guaranteed a spot on a flight the next afternoon, but that meant we had to find a ride back home and to the airport again the next day or stay in a hotel. It also would mean I would be late to my party with all my friends the next night. But how could we turn down $800 in flight vouchers?! We gave up our seats since we weren't in a rush to get home since our trip was for 3 weeks anyway. We also asked if they could get us a hotel for free in Portland and they did! The not so good part is that our luggage was sent with the flight we were supposed to be on so we had to buy contact cases and solution, but Delta had little overnight kits for us.
Our sweet hotel

they might be giants
The awesome overnight kit, complete with toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, deodorant, razor, shaving cream and t-shirt.

Wearing our XXL t-shirts from the overnight kit!

The cute little deodorant. I just loved it!

Another bonus was that we got to eat Panda Express! We had been craving panda for several weeks, but the closest one to us was a half hour away...and we just couldn't justify the drive for it!

We were able to get a late check-out so we didn't have to hang out at the airport for too long the next day. When they reassigned our tickets for our new flight, Chris got a ticket for first class!! We argued for a while about who should get to sit there, but I won out and made Chris take it. Long story short, Chris gave up his seat to the guy sitting next to me so we could sit together and the guy could sit by his family who happened to be right behind the first class seat. We made it to the SLC airport which was PACKED and I made it to my party. Although I was really late, it was worth it for all that we got! We thought about taking a trip somewhere with the vouchers, but we mostly just want to visit home so we will be using the vouchers for next summer and next Christmas!

haha love it! good choice!
When I was flying home I heard about the flight voucher offers but sadly I really needed to get home that 400 dollar offer was pretty tempting even though I had to get home...but just as well I didn't because a few hours later they closed the Dallas airport.
So glad you can visit us again so cheaply! It is well worth the little bit of inconvenience.
